Andrew has been general secretary of the Fabian Society since Autumn 2011 and in that time has led the society’s research on economic and social policy as well as the future of the Labour party. He was previously director of policy and public affairs for Age UK and before that was a researcher for the New Policy Institute and a backbench Labour MP. He has also served as a board member, Treasurer and Vice President of the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) and as chair of governors of a London primary school and children’s centre. He has degrees from Cambridge, LSE and London Business School. He has been a Labour party activist since 18 and was a parliamentary candidate in the 2005 general election.

Olivia joined the Fabian Society as research director in July 2015. She was previously political advisor to a member of Labour’s shadow cabinet where she worked on Labour’s policy development and political reform. Prior to this Olivia worked for the BBC, as the chair of Labour Students and as an elected officer at the NUS. Tobias is a researcher and assistant editor at the Fabian Society, having joined in January 2016. Prior to working for the Fabians he worked at the Institute of Art and Ideas for a year where he was head of politics. Kate joined the Fabian Society in September 2016 after several years as a freelance journalist and editor. She has written for national newspapers and magazines on social policy, particularly health, housing and social care and was previously editor of Inside Housing magazine. Claire joined the Fabian Society in March 2016. Previously, she worked in the communications team at Carers UK. Claire holds a History PhD from the University of Warwick. She wrote her thesis on the emergence of the carer in the context of post-war English and Welsh mental health care.

Alex joined the Fabian Society as head of partnerships and events in January 2016. She previously worked at a financial education charity, and prior to this, in the City. Alex joined the Labour party whilst she was a student at Durham University, and was a parliamentary candidate in the 2015 general election. Alex sits on Labour’s London Regional Board as the representative for NW London, is a school governor in her local area, and the CLP secretary of her local Labour party.

Robin joined the Fabian Society in September 2016 on the society’s graduate scheme and now holds the position of events and communications officer. Prior to working at the Fabian Society, Robin studied International Relations at the London School of Economics. Robin is interested in foreign policy, cyber security, defence, political economy and media. He is currently a steering committee member of the Fabian International Policy Group.

Phil leads the society’s finance and operations strategy. He joined the Fabian Society in July 2009. He is a Fellow Chartered Certified Accountant and holds a degree in business finance from the University of Westminster. Prior to joining the Fabians, Phil worked as a senior finance officer at a housing association based in Highbury and previously worked for Johnson & Johnson as a financial accountant.

 

 

 

 

 

Shehana Udat,  membership officer

Shehana joined the Fabian Society in 2018. She holds a Master’s degree in human rightsfrom University College London. Previously she has worked for several human rights organisations including working in parliament with a focus on the Commonwealth. She currently splits her time between working at the Fabians and for an organisation which has a focus on global development and social justice.

Shehana works at the Fabian Society on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

 

 

 

 

Deborah Stoate,  local Fabian societies officer

Deborah provides support and guidance to local Fabian societies, including supporting new societies to launch and established ones to work together on regional events. She has been secretary of Dartford and Gravesham Fabian Society for 12 years. She worked as constituency office manager for her husband, Dr Howard Stoate, whilst he was an MP. She teaches music in a primary school in Greenwich. She is a Dartford borough councillor and secretary of Dartford Labour party.

Deborah works at the Fabian Society on Thursdays.

 

Scottish Fabians

Katherine Sangster,  national manager

Katherine has experience in finance, marketing and project management both in the corporate and charitable sectors.  Prior to joining the Fabian Society she spent eight years as Head of Office for a prominent business leader.  She volunteers with Children’s Hearings Scotland and actively campaigns for fairer access to childcare.  She is vice chair of her local CLP and a candidate in the upcoming local elections in Scotland.
